Perched on the car-free island of Hankø in the Oslofjord, Hankø Hotell & Spa has welcomed guests since 1877 — making it one of Norway’s longest-running retreat destinations. Accessible only by a short ferry crossing from Vikane on the mainland (approximately 12 km from Fredrikstad), the island exudes an effortless sense of escape: smooth coastal rocks, salt-scented sea air, and the gentle sound of rigging from the island’s celebrated sailing club define the atmosphere.
The Floating Sauna
The centrepiece of the outdoor wellness experience is the wood-fired floating sauna moored in the sheltered bay of Husebukta at Hankø Seilerkro — a traditional Nordic sauna cabin set directly on the water, with sea bathing available straight from the platform, accommodating up to ten people. Next to the floating sauna is a wood-fired stamp (outdoor hot tub) for additional thermal contrast. Guests can book the floating sauna, stamp, or a combination package for exclusive private sessions of two or four hours.
The Spa
The spa complex is one of the most comprehensive on the eastern Norwegian coast, featuring an indoor pool (12.5 × 6 metres, 28 °C), a jacuzzi, Finnish and steam saunas, a Turkish hammam, a gym, yoga room, and fifteen treatment rooms offering everything from lava-shell massage to aromatherapy rituals.
Island Life
The island’s car-free character means the pace of life slows the moment you disembark the ferry. Scenic coastal hiking trails, tennis courts, and a guest marina complete the picture. With no traffic and sweeping fjord views, Hankø Hotell & Spa strikes a rare balance between genuine remoteness and polished comfort — a place where the Oslo crowd has been retreating to unwind for generations.
