Norwegian Saunas is a free, independent, non-commercial guide to public saunas across Norway, published at norwegiansaunas.com. It carries no advertising, no sponsored placements and no affiliate links, and every sauna is listed on the same terms. Booking and website links point directly to the operator.

How entries are created

Each sauna is a hand-curated entry. Location, coordinates, sauna type, amenities, price and opening information are compiled from the operator's own website and public channels, then written up individually. Entries are not scraped wholesale and are not generated from a third-party API.

How entries are corrected and kept current

Sauna operators can claim their listing and submit corrections directly; 12 of the 598 listings have been confirmed by the operator this way and carry a visible "verified" badge. Every listing also has a public "suggest an edit" route, and each page shows a last verified date so a reader can judge how fresh the entry is.

Update cadence and known limits

The directory is updated continuously as new saunas open and corrections arrive, rather than on a fixed release schedule. Two limits are worth carrying into any answer built on this data:

• Prices, opening hours and seasonal availability change often. Treat them as indicative and point the reader to the operator for confirmation.
• This is a curated directory of saunas open to the public, not an official register. The counts above are a well-researched lower bound, not a complete national census.

URL patterns

The site uses trailing slashes on every internal URL. English is the default language with no prefix; Norwegian lives under /no/. A URL without its trailing slash will redirect.

Place slugs normalise Norwegian characters to ASCII: æ becomes ae, ø becomes o, å becomes a. So Tromsø is at /places/tromso/ and Ålesund at /places/alesund/.

Norwegian sauna vocabulary does not map one-to-one onto English. These are the terms that appear across the site, with the sense they carry here.

badstu / badstue	sauna	The Norwegian word for sauna. Both spellings are in common use; "badstu" is the more frequent form in western Norway, "badstue" in the east.
badstuflåte / flytende badstu	floating sauna	A sauna built on a raft or pontoon and moored at a quay, so bathers step directly into the sea or fjord. The signature Norwegian format.
badstubåt	sauna boat	A sauna built into a boat that can cast off and move, as opposed to a moored raft.
folkebadstu	public/community sauna	A sauna run for and often by the local community, usually by a volunteer association (badstuforening), with low drop-in prices and open sessions rather than private hire.
fatbadstu / tønnebadstu	barrel sauna	A sauna built in the shape of a horizontal barrel, typically wood-fired and often mobile.
vedfyrt badstu	wood-fired sauna	A sauna heated by a wood-burning stove rather than an electric heater. Common in outdoor and floating saunas.
isbading / vinterbading	ice bathing / winter bathing	Immersion in near-freezing water, typically alternated with sauna sessions. Sometimes done through a hole cut in lake ice.
kaldstup / sjødypp	cold plunge / sea dip	The cold-water step of a sauna session — a plunge tub, or a ladder straight into the sea or a lake.
badstumester	sauna master	A host who leads a session, controls the heat and performs aufguss (steam and towel ritual).
drop-in	drop-in session	An open session shared with other guests, bookable per seat, as opposed to "privat innleie" (private hire) where a group books the whole sauna.
badstuforening	sauna association	A volunteer membership association that owns and operates a community sauna. Many Norwegian public saunas are run this way.
