The Gamle Fredrikstad Badstue- og Badeforening (GFBB) is a community-run, volunteer organisation dedicated to nurturing the sauna and cold-bathing tradition in the historic old town of Fredrikstad. Founded in 2020 and officially opened on 14 July 2023, the association operates an authentic Finnish wood-fired sauna that was transported directly from Finland — a detail that speaks volumes about the founders’ commitment to genuine sauna culture. The sauna is permanently located at Bevø Camping, right on the shore of the Glomma estuary in Gamlebyen.
The Sauna
With space for up to 12 people, the sauna heats up the old-fashioned way: slowly, with birch wood, to produce the dense, soft steam that Finnish sauna enthusiasts call löyly. After the heat, guests cool off in the adjacent sea water — or brave the outdoor “Viking shower” in the summer months. The atmosphere is deliberately unhurried and communal, guided by the principle of “badefred” (sauna peace): all visitors are asked to respect the tranquility and inclusive spirit of the space.
Community Ethos
The association operates as a true non-profit: all revenue from drop-in sessions and private rentals goes directly back into running and improving the facilities. Drop-in sessions require no advance booking — guests simply arrive during opening hours, pay the sauna master on arrival (cash, card, or Vipps), and join the session if space is available. Private rentals for groups can be arranged by contacting the team via the website.
Location
GFBB is a gem within walking distance of the atmospheric cobblestone streets and military bastions of Gamlebyen, one of the best-preserved fortified wooden towns in Scandinavia. It is a grassroots project born from a newspaper article in 2018 and now a beloved fixture in Fredrikstad’s social calendar.
