Haganes Sauna is one of the most scenic entries in the Vestfjord Sauna network, perched directly by the sea in the tiny coastal community of Haganes on the island-studded Austevoll archipelago, southwest of Bergen. The sauna is electric — always pre-heated to 90 °C or above when guests arrive — meaning there is no fire to tend and no waiting. The instant, enveloping warmth combined with direct views over the fjord creates a profoundly calming atmosphere from the very first moment you step inside.
The Setting
The location is quintessentially western Norwegian: rough-hewn shoreline, open Atlantic light, the smell of salt and seaweed on the breeze, and the gentle sound of water lapping below the sauna structure. Cooling off is as simple as stepping outside and lowering yourself into the sea — the fjord water is directly accessible and provides the perfect cold counterpoint to the intense heat. Guests typically alternate between heat rounds and sea plunges in a meditative, unhurried rhythm.
Booking
As part of the Vestfjord Sauna network, Haganes can be booked as a shared session (up to 6 guests, NOK 199/hour per person) or as a fully private exclusive booking (NOK 999/hour for the whole sauna). Monthly memberships are also available, making it an excellent option for locals who want regular access. Booking is done entirely online via the Vestfjord Sauna website, with an access code sent by SMS.
Getting There
Haganes is reachable from Bergen by road and ferry via Austevoll. The journey rewards those willing to make it — the Austevoll seascape, with its archipelago of low islands and open-water channels, is beautiful at any time of year.
