Lydersen Rorbuer

Wood-fired barrel sauna and outdoor jacuzzi amid Lofoten's dramatic Flakstad scenery

Fredvang, Northern Norway

Fredvang is one of those corners of Lofoten that genuinely stops you in your tracks. A tiny fishing village strung across a pair of narrow bridges between the mountains and the sea, it sits on the southwestern tip of Flakstad island — some of the most photographed coastline in all of Norway. Lydersen Rorbuer occupies this setting with a handful of traditional red-painted fisherman’s cottages, and at the water’s edge, a wood-fired barrel sauna paired with an outdoor jacuzzi.

The Barrel Sauna Experience

The sauna is a classic Norwegian barrel design, heated by a wood-fired stove that radiates a dry, even heat. Guests stoke the fire themselves, giving sessions a satisfying, hands-on quality. Once the temperature climbs to around 80–90 °C, the contrast with a plunge in the fjord — or a drop into the outdoor jacuzzi — is dramatic. The view from both the sauna and the jacuzzi takes in the jagged Flakstad peaks, the open Nappstraumen channel, and, on clear nights, the stars or the Northern Lights spread across the entire sky above the mountains.

Staying in the Rorbuer

The cottages at Lydersen are the genuine article — restored rorbu cabins in the tradition of the seasonal fishermen who worked these waters for centuries. Each is equipped with a kitchen, living area, and enough space for couples or small groups. Private booking of the sauna is included for accommodation guests, meaning you have the whole setup to yourselves: no shared timeslots, no crowds. It is the kind of quiet that is increasingly rare in Lofoten.

Fredvang and the Surrounding Area

Fredvang sits within easy reach of Lofoten’s most spectacular beaches — Kvalvika and Ytresand are both accessible on foot or by short drive. The Fredvang bridges themselves are one of the archipelago’s most iconic sights, and the surrounding mountains offer hiking routes ranging from gentle coastal walks to serious ridge scrambles. The fishing here is excellent too, and the cottages’ location on the water makes it easy to cast a line directly from the dock. In winter, the surf at nearby Unstad Beach draws a dedicated international crowd, and the barrel sauna becomes the warm centrepiece of long cold evenings by the fire.
