Lillesotra Sauna

Himalayan salt-wall sauna with halotherapy benefits on Sotra island near Bergen

Straume, Western Norway

Lillesotra Sauna is one of the most distinctive saunas in western Norway, housed at RAN Seilforening sailing club on Sotra island in Øygarden municipality, just west of Bergen. Its defining feature is a Himalayan salt-block wall inside the sauna cabin — a striking amber-glowing structure that transforms the interior into a warm, mineral-rich environment. As the temperature climbs above 90 °C, the salt wall releases fine mineral particles into the air, delivering halotherapy benefits said to support respiratory health and skin condition.

The Salt Sauna Experience

The therapeutic concept is known as haloterapi in Norwegian, and Lillesotra is one of the few dedicated Himalayan salt saunas on the Norwegian west coast. The soft, diffuse warmth generated by the salt wall feels noticeably different from a conventional electric sauna — gentler in onset, yet deeply penetrating. The amber glow makes the interior feel intimate and atmospheric in any season, and the combination of high heat and mineral air is deeply relaxing.

Cold Plunge and Setting

Immediately outside the sauna cabin, the clean fjord water of the Sotra coastline is accessible for cooling plunges. The contrast between the intense dry heat within and the cold seawater outside is the rhythm that generations of Nordic bathers have used to stimulate circulation and sharpen mental clarity. The RAN Seilforening site also provides parking and practical shower facilities.

Booking

Operated by the Vestfjord Sauna network, Lillesotra can be booked as a shared session (up to 6 guests, NOK 199/hour per person) or as a private booking (NOK 999/hour). Monthly passes and a multi-location Sauna Lover membership are available, ideal for anyone based on Sotra or commuting to Bergen who wants regular high-quality sauna access close to the coast.
