Beito Husky Wilderness Cabins

Off-grid cabins above lake Øyangen at the foot of Jotunheimen with a wood-fired lakeside sauna

Beitostølen, Eastern Norway

High above the valley floor on a granite rock shelf, looking down at lake Øyangen and up towards the peaks of Jotunheimen, two wilderness cabins sit in a state of deliberate remoteness. These are the Beito Husky Wilderness Cabins — off-grid, private, and reached by a route that ensures the feeling of true seclusion. Managed by Beito Husky Tours, the experience here is built around connection with the Norwegian mountain environment in its rawest form, with the wood-fired sauna by the lake as the natural and deeply satisfying conclusion to any day spent in this extraordinary landscape.

The Lakeside Sauna

The wood-fired sauna is available as an add-on to cabin stays and is positioned directly at the shore of lake Øyangen. The sauna ritual here has a particular intensity: the high-altitude setting, the cold water of the mountain lake, and the complete absence of other people combine to produce something that feels genuinely wild. Heat builds slowly in the wood-fired stove, the temperature climbs to proper sauna levels, and then the lake — clear, cold, and still — waits outside the door. In winter, when the lake may be partly frozen and snow surrounds the sauna on three sides, the experience becomes especially memorable.

Off-Grid Cabin Life

The two cabins are designed for genuine off-grid living. Solar power, wood stoves, and simple but well-considered interiors make for a comfortable stay without any of the infrastructure of a conventional hotel. Provisions must be largely self-sufficient — this is part of the appeal. Evenings are spent by the stove, watching the light change on the lake below, with Jotunheimen’s silhouette darkening against the sky. In winter, Beito Husky Tours organises dog sledding and guided wilderness excursions from these cabins, adding an additional layer of adventure to the experience.

Jotunheimen at the Doorstep

Beitostølen is one of the main gateways to Jotunheimen National Park — home to Norway’s highest peaks, including Galdhøpiggen and Glittertind. The cabin’s elevated position offers views deep into the national park, and marked summer and winter trails pass close by. Beitostølen village itself is a well-equipped alpine resort with cross-country and downhill skiing in winter and mountain biking and hiking in summer.
