Varangertunet Sauna

Traditional Finnish wood-fired sauna in Vestre Jakobselv

Vestre Jakobselv, Northern Norway

Varangertunet Sauna is a traditional Finnish wood-fired sauna at Varangertunet, a family-run guest house in Vestre Jakobselv on the Varanger Peninsula. The sauna is built the way Finnish immigrants have done for generations in this region, with a wood-burning stove and hot water tank.

The Experience

The sauna at Varangertunet is an authentic piece of living history. At the beginning of the 1800s, Finnish immigrants (known as Kvens) moved across the border to Norway due to food shortages, bringing their sauna culture with them. The tradition took root in Varanger and has been passed down through generations.

The wood-fired sauna accommodates up to 8 people and features a traditional hot water tank heated by the stove. After your sauna, explore the grounds of Varangertunet, where campfire sites are scattered around the yard — you can purchase firewood at reception or order a traditional campfire meal.
