Laugaren is an idealistic, volunteer-run floating sauna at Georgernes Verft in Bergen, built during the pandemic by Bergen Laugarlag. Named after the Old Norse word “lauge,” meaning to bathe or wash, Laugaren has quickly become one of Norway’s most celebrated sauna experiences, earning Sauna of the Year 2024 and the prestigious DOGA award for outstanding design and architecture.
Built with sustainable, locally sourced materials, Laugaren is a non-commercial project driven by over 100 dedicated volunteers. The low pricing ensures the sauna remains accessible to everyone, reflecting the community’s belief that bathing culture belongs to all. Beyond traditional sauna sessions, Laugaren hosts cultural events, winter swimming courses, and artistic collaborations that make it a vibrant social meeting place.
The wood-fired sauna sits on the water at USF Verftet, one of Bergen’s most dynamic cultural venues. After heating up, bathers step out onto the deck and plunge into the fjord. One or two sauna volunteers are always on hand to ensure everything runs smoothly. The setting, framed by Bergen’s harbor and surrounding mountains, makes every session memorable. Booking in advance is recommended.
