Kramsjø Guesthouse

Intimate Hardangerfjord guesthouse in historic 19th-century buildings with sauna, floating dock, and wood-fired pizza restaurant

Herand, Western Norway

On the south side of the Hardangerfjord, in the small village of Herand in Jondal municipality, Kramsjø Guesthouse occupies a collection of 19th-century buildings that have been quietly and carefully restored into one of western Norway’s most appealing small retreats. Eight rooms, distributed across buildings that carry the weight of their age with dignity, look out over the fjord — one of the broadest and most beautiful stretches of the Hardangerfjord, where mountains drop steeply to the water on every side. The sauna, the floating dock, and the wood-fired pizza restaurant next door complete a package that feels genuinely unhurried and right.

Sauna and Fjord Swimming

The sauna at Kramsjø is designed to work in direct dialogue with the fjord. After heating up properly, guests walk directly to the private floating dock and enter the Hardangerfjord — cold, clean, and deep green in summer, still and mirror-flat on calm winter days. The contrast between the sauna heat and the fjord water is the classic Norwegian combination, and here it happens in one of the country’s most beautiful settings. The floating dock provides easy access to the water at all tides, and the jump from dock to fjord is as straightforward and exhilarating as it sounds.

The Guesthouse Rooms and Buildings

The 19th-century buildings at Kramsjø have been restored with visible respect for their original character. Thick timber walls, original floorboards, and carefully chosen period-appropriate details sit alongside modern comforts — good beds, warm bathrooms, and heating systems that work properly in a fjord village winter. The eight rooms are individually configured, and the intimacy of the property means that guests tend to find themselves in genuine conversation with each other and with the hosts. This is a guesthouse in the original sense: a place where hospitality is personal.

Wood-Fired Pizza and Hardanger

The adjacent wood-fired pizza restaurant rounds out the Kramsjø experience in an unexpected and thoroughly welcome direction. Evenings that begin with a sauna and fjord swim, followed by wood-fired pizza and a glass of local cider, represent something close to an ideal western Norway evening. The Hardanger region itself is famous for its fruit orchards — visible in spectacular flower in spring — and for cider production that has grown into a serious artisan industry. The region’s hiking trails, fjord kayaking routes, and the famous Hardangervidda plateau are all accessible from Herand.
