Dampen Sauna Fjaerland

Floating sauna at the foot of glaciers

Fjaerland, Western Norway

Dampen Sauna Fjaerland is a floating sauna in the village of Fjaerland, situated at the innermost reaches of the Sognefjord where glacial arms descend from the Jostedalsbreen ice cap. The setting is extraordinary, with glacier-fed waters, steep mountain walls, and an almost otherworldly silence.

The floating sauna provides warmth and comfort on the cold fjord waters. Between sauna rounds, guests dip into water that carries the chill of ancient ice. Looking up from the water, the views of glaciers and mountains are humbling. This is one of those rare sauna experiences where the natural surroundings completely steal the show.

Fjaerland is known as Norway’s “Book Town,” with second-hand bookshops scattered throughout the village. Combined with the nearby Norwegian Glacier Museum and the sauna, it makes for a richly varied day trip. The village is accessible by car from both Bergen and the Sognefjord ferry routes.
