Mandal is known as the southernmost town in Norway and one of the sunniest, with a wide sandy beach, a compact white-painted town centre, and a long tradition of summer life on the water. Hagefjorden, the sheltered inlet that curves behind the town, is the setting for one of the area’s more distinctive sauna experiences: the Badstubåt ved Hilda Larsen, a bookable floating sauna moored close to the celebrated Hilda Larsen restaurant on the waterfront.
The Sauna Boat
The sauna boat is a private-booking venue, available to groups who want an exclusive session on the water without a public audience. Bookings are made directly by SMS or email — a deliberately simple, personal arrangement that fits the unhurried character of Mandal. The boat is separate from the better-known Badstubåten Pysen, the river-based floating sauna that operates independently in the Mandal river system, giving the town two quite different sauna-on-water experiences to choose from.
The Hagefjorden location means the sauna sits in calm, sheltered water, with a clear view along the inlet and easy access to the sea for a cool dip between rounds. The combination of a private session, a scenic fjord mooring, and the proximity of Hilda Larsen — one of the most acclaimed restaurants in Agder — makes this a natural centrepiece for a special occasion or an evening out with a small group.
Mandal and Its Surroundings
Mandal’s old town is one of the most intact collections of 19th-century wooden architecture in Norway, and the waterfront has a quiet, unhurried quality that is increasingly rare. The town beach, Sjøsanden, is one of the finest sand beaches on the entire Norwegian coast — broad, sheltered, and backed by dunes and pine forest. After a sauna session in Hagefjorden, guests are well placed to explore the town on foot, visit the Mandal Museum, or simply settle in at Hilda Larsen for a long dinner.
The sauna boat is best suited to evenings, when the fjord quietens, the light turns golden, and Mandal’s waterfront takes on its most atmospheric quality.
