Bade-Olena is a floating bathhouse sauna in the picturesque harbour of Skudeneshavn, one of Norway’s best-preserved wooden house towns on the southern tip of Karmøy. Named after Olena Gitlesen, who established Skudeneshavn’s first bathhouse in 1873, this modern facility honours a rich local bathing tradition.
The History
In 1873, Olena Gitlesen was employed as a “badekone” (bathing woman) and established the town’s first bathhouse. Those who remembered Bade-Olena described her as small and remarkably thin, yet she performed the strenuous work of running the bath with dedication. The modern floating bathhouse, opened in summer 2021, continues her legacy.
The Experience
The intimate sauna accommodates up to 8 people and is booked in 1-hour sessions. After warming up in the sauna, take a refreshing swim directly in the harbour basin of Skudeneshavn. The setting, surrounded by white wooden houses and sailing boats, is quintessentially Norwegian.
